Core purpose. . . is the organization’s fundamental reason for being. . . When properly conceived, purpose is broad, fundamental and enduring; a good purpose should serve to guide and inspire the organization for years, perhaps a century or more” (Collins & Porras 224, 76-77).
As a lifelong learner, I’m always looking for ways to improve our business. Every year, my WPO group of some 20 women business owners reads a book about the latest trends in operating a successful business. Most authors—Lencioni, Collins, Harnish, etc.—state that defining a company’s core purpose is the foundation on which everything else is built.
I’ve struggled to define Huckestein’s core purpose for seven years.
- Who do our customers need us to be?
- Who do we need to be to sustain the business?
- What business model best capitalizes on our employees’ talents?
Here’s what we’re not:
We’re not a plan/spec construction contractor. We have trouble bidding to someone else’s drawings if we don’t agree with them. It’s hard for our tradespeople to build only what is on the drawings, and submit change orders to do it right. We don’t participate in the “race to the bottom” that has been the construction industry paradigm since 2008.
We’re not “just a little service contractor.” Our multi-million-dollar portfolio of work is cradle to grave, and includes preventive maintenance, service and repair, equipment replacement, engineering, design-build projects, energy management, controls, commissioning, and retro-commissioning.
Here’s what we are:
We’re problem solvers. When it comes to mechanical systems, we can figure out and remedy any challenge, from the smallest equipment adjustment to complete system re-engineering. Huckestein employees are highly intelligent, experts in their fields, and comfortable working collaboratively to leverage each other’s talents to the benefit of our customers.
We’re minimalists. When designing a mechanical system, we believe in applying the simplest, most cost-efficient solution practical. We don’t believe in over designing just to be safe. Every solution is right-sized for the application, no more, no less.
We’re efficient. Our design-build project delivery model lowers overall cost by 5% over traditional design-bid-build, while completing projects up to 35% faster. And our SERVICEPLAN ™ planned maintenance platform enables seamless interaction and real-time information exchange between us and our customers. We respect everyone’s busy schedules and strive to minimize disruptions by anticipating customer needs and proactively addressing them.
We’re sustainable. Our business model is based on long-term relationships built on mutual trust, both with customers and employees. Some of our technicians have worked at Huckestein for 20-30 years, and several customers have been with us longer than that! We want every customer, whether first-time or legacy, to be delighted with our work. It is this focus that helps us grow during good times and sustains us when times are lean.
Based on all this, here’s my attempt at succinctly describing Huckestein’s Core Purpose…
Huckestein Mechanical Services:
- designs, builds, services, and maintains non-residential HVAC systems,
- efficiently moving projects from concept to reality
- and services from reactive to proactive,
- leveraging the company’s talents
- to optimize our customers’ investment in valuable mechanical assets
